KOCC Crits @ Steel River
« on: January 04, 2010, 11:48:59 am »
Some advance warning of a pleasant temporary change to race venue for KOCC, and something that will hopefully boost racing numbers over the tail end of summer.

On 23.1.10, 13.2.10 & 20.3.10 KOCC is hosting crit races @ Steel River starting at 2pm (A grade will start at about 4pm).  The course will be the "squoval" course, which provides for fast, interesting but not scary racing on a delightfully smooth surface.  For those who have not raced on this course or this race format, it is a hell of a lot of fun and makes a welcome change to  3/4/5/6/7 lap races around the Gang up to three times a week.  Your bike will no doubt appreciate a holiday from "Kooragang Pave'"...

Personally, I applaud the KOCC Committee for trying this.

If you are have an interest in having quality racing, and improving your skills and fitness, please support these three races.  If these three races are not supported then all you do is give the naysayers ammunition to shoot down future innovation with the race calendar.  So, give it a go, ya bunters!

Kooragang club are running criteriums at Steel River instead of it's normal races this Saturday the 23rd Jan, again on Saturday the 13th Feb and also Saturday the 13th March , if you want to have a race on a fast flat smooth circuit come along and have a go.

Google Map

Juniors   2.00 pm (will be doing a TT, Scratch race and a Handicap)
F Grade  2.30 pm (12 mins + 3 laps)
E Grade  2.45 pm (15 mins + 3 laps)
D Grade  3.05 pm (15 mins + 3 laps)
C Grade  3.25 pm (15 mins + 3 laps)
B Grade  3.45 pm (25 mins + 3 laps)
A Grade  4.15 pm (30 mins + 3 laps)

Times may be adjusted and races might be extended depending on numbers etc so get there with time to spare so you don't miss out.

Well done Kocc. Great arvo of racing, & with a little more polish, the next event will run even smoother.

The crit this Saturday is being held at Kooragang not at Steel river, this is due to complaints from the tenants that had their garden trampled and were inconvenienced by a large group of cyclists blocking their business.

This is disapointing.  The Steel River Course is a great change. The main cause of the complaints was the location that the rego tent was placed. Surely KOCC aren't going to give up on Steel River because of 1 complaint??

Yes it is, but is the right decision for two reasons.

Firstly, KOCC (and HDCC) should engage with the complainants and try to resolve differences.  The complainants had cause for complaint, and they need to be heard and steps taken to avoid a repeat of the undesirable conduct.

Secondly, some in HDCC (including, rather unfortunately, on the Committee of that Club) have suggested the manner in which KOCC ran one crit might cause HDCC to lose "its" course.  Well, fcuk me.  It is a public road, the complainants were upset with the manner in which the HDCC crits were run and the letter the clubs received from NCC was plainly directed to ALL crits run at Steel River - and that means the event run by KOCC and the events run by HDCC,  So I think it was sensible for KOCC to step back to avoid the rather purile arguments put forward by some at HDCC who do know better.

However, the REAL problem with Steel River is not what the clubs are doing - it is what some of us do.  Some of us (well, not me) park cars in private car spaces (trespass), trample private gardens (criminal damage) and urinate on private property (offensive conduct).  We really have no one to blame but ourselves and it is not, ultimately, the fault of either club.
