A few people have asked me whether any one is doing the Swansea Ride this Friday, which marks two years since the accident in which Dom Mason was killed and Daniel Chaloub suffered significant injuries. Most of the people who have asked me were at the accident - guys like Don Zeeman and Ross Harrington.
The answer I gave to them is "yes, I will be leaving the John Hunter at 6am sharp, and riding normal pace to Swansea then back". If people wish to come for a ride that is fine, but I am also happy to ride solo. It will not be like the old Swansea Express ride in terms of pace - mainly because I am physically incapable of such pace - but equally the pace should be a typical B grade paced training ride. It will not be a sombre slow remeberance ride -
****, Dom would be doing cartwheels in his grave if he thought the people on "his" ride were soft pedalling!
Michelle Mason (Dom's widow) and some of her family (including Dom's two kids) and friends will be there. She is a pretty cool and very strong woman, and this is an important day for her. I think she appreciates the support racing cyclists have given her, and despite the obvious awkwardness of having a bunch of cyclists turning up at the place where the accident happened, I think she is cool with it.
So - a matter for people to decide for themselves if they want to ride this Friday or not.
