Ride2Ride
« on: October 19, 2010, 05:49:01 pm »
While I was out riding the other morning I caught up with a guy riding up the highway at Hexam, I started chatting with him and he said that he was riding to Brisbane for a charity event, as I needed to do some training I ask if I could ride with him to Karuah he said that he would really appreciate having someone to talk to while he rides.

He explained that he had a accident and was in a coma and was doing this ride to help raise money for the National Jockeys Trust, as they had helped him a lot when he had his fall and injury.

Here is some more info from the National Jockeys Trust website about him and the ride.

Lachlan Fyfe - Charity Bicycle Ride

Ride2RideRibbon Departs from Rosehill Racecourse (Sydney) October 9th 2010 and concludes at Eagle Farm Racecourse (Brisbane) 23rd October 2010.

Lachlan’s Story;

Lachlan Fyfe was a promising young apprentice to Graeme Rogerson at Randwick. He was riding winners in Sydney before the tragic event that all jockeys try not to think about happened. Lachlan was riding in barrier trials on the 15th December 2008 when his horse fell. Lachlan sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. He remained in a coma until Christmas Day. Lachlan has sustained permanent brain injuries as a result of the fall. His short term memory is permanently affected. Lachlan has lost strength, balance and co-ordination. Apart from losing a promising career he is unable to find permanent employment due to his injuries and permanent disability.

Lachlan has an amazing attitude considering the challenges he faces every day. As part of his rehabilitation he rode a gym bike for many hours to increase his fitness and co-ordination. He can no longer run to keep fit but he can ride a bike. He got sick of staring at a TV in a Gym and so he bought a road bicycle. Back in April he came up with the idea of completing a charity bike ride. Since April Lachlan has been waking up around 3am most mornings to prepare for his big ride. He has been cycling around the highways of the Central Coast and Newcastle preparing for this ride.
Lachlan’s Cause;

When Lachlan was injured he received financial support from the National Jockeys Trust (NJT). The NJT was established in 2004 as an initiative of the Australian Jockeys Association (AJA) to assist ill and injured jockeys. The NJT has assisted over 60 jockeys to date and is in urgent need of funds as it receives no government funding and purely relies on donations and sponsors to keep going.

Lachlan also volunteers at The Central Coast Division for The Riding for the disabled and would like to raise funds to assist the branch in providing their services and support to their disabled riders.
