Magpies
« on: July 12, 2010, 08:56:53 am »
Is there a prize for being the first cyclist swooped in a Magpie season? If so I'll put my hand up for a crack at it.

I was swooped by the bugger at the Northern end of the Tourle Street bridge after racing Saturday. It seems a year has not dimmed his anger towards cyclists.

Masso - he was not there riding home from racing on Saturday...I had a very keen eye out for him.  No wonder you have so much kick in your sprint when you duel with "The Hawk" every day...

I thought the John Reshaw Killer had died or moved on. I was mistaken he's back and badder than ever. He now has a taste for blood after taking a piece out of my ear yesterday afternoon and it's still sore today, and he was back sitting up on his Hino sign ready this morning.

There's a very persistent magpie going west along Lambton Rd just before New Lambton shops. This guy made contact with me a few days ago and I've heard from others he can be quite forceful in his attacks.

Your not wrong, Lambton maggie  got me yesterday even went underneath helmet to hit skin. I'm sure the bastards are getting smarter. It's bad enough that motorists hate us let alone birds of prey as well.
keep it rubber side down

You must have been going too slow - it could not keep up with Bartel and I yesterday...don't be the weak link in Team Rees Pritchard...

More seriously, I think all maggies are getting aggressive as the year proceeds. I am told Ebo has said if you ride with one hand on your helmet, like a rooster comb, the magpies will hover over you but not attack. Sure you look dumb, or in my case even dumber than normal, but it seemed to work on the Toule St Bridge Budgie yesterday.  No need to wave your hand about - just hold it up there and wiggle your fingers.

And stay upright with steady steering!!

One would look even dumber  following the above advice and ending down on the pavement!!
(I don't trust my co-ordination that much)

Let me know when the  Tourle St maggie retires for the season, and I will start riding from my daughter's at Mayfield East again.  I often end up on my own returning after races as the "peloton" tends to speed up on the "straight" and I struggle to keep up. So I would have to contend with the flying friend without company.  At present the car is clocking up a few extra k's instead.

Commuter, is that a bit of bragging, "riding slowly over the bride", or a typo? :o

Gai,

Noted, but it is much safer than waving a hand about or looking around for the bird - just ride looking ahead with one hand "doing the rooster".  Personally I have no problem riding one hand without risk, but people need to consider their skills before attempting this method - jezz, that sounds like some lawyers disclaimer... ;D
