Crit track at the velo
« on: July 01, 2010, 01:01:59 pm »
Hi all,

check out the Newcastle Herald today for an update on our plans at the velo. We will keep trying to have our plans out in the media so we can hopefully get some government support soon.

As a result of the article, 2HD will be interviewing Craig Chapman with the recording to be aired hopefully on the Monday morning breakfast program. So tune into that one and let everyone know what we are trying to achieve.

Thats a great photo Robbo.

Looks to be an exciting future for the velodrome as well.

Already had a number of requests from some of the girls that I work with for details and phone
numbers on a couple of the gentleman in the photo!

Yes, they are well over 18 (the cyclists I mean).

Spandy.
in vino veritas

It was exciting to flip through the sports pages today, and see quite a sizeable photo of local cyclists accompanied by the announcement of the planning of a crit track at the velodrome.  As a track cyclist who is keen to do crits, this was thrilling news.  I knew there was some plan of this, but I thought it was still at the vision (dream) stage.

................

The crit track would indeed be great to get kids on their bikes off the roads.  (The boys for their own protection) the girls, however, to gain confidence and skills  in a controlled environment as they generally are not so gung-ho as the boys.

Personally, I hope the crit track is operational well before I have to retire from competition.

Gai,

you seriously have problems! and I mean PROBLEMS!

You and all the females listed in your post have, and still do, receive constant coaching and support from the males. The cyclists in the photo were those that were there when the photographer showed up - gee I thought you put more time in at the track than any other cyclist? There were more people there that day as well who decided they didnt want to be in the photo. Sorry but none of these were females, there were none there at all. As we had waited for over a month for the photographer to turn up we werent going to let him go just because there were no females present.

As I have said to you previously, if you have a problem with fast racing, or anything else we are promoting at the Newcastle Velodrome, please head somewhere else and cease your constant whinging.

 constant whinging...?

I consider that I am generally fairly positive, but I will allude to problems as I see them or experience them.

BTW
As a cyclist, I would love to be younger/male/have enough cash for great equipment etc....

Gai,

Robbo probably feels your comments were unreasonably negative, when something positive might have been considered to be appropriate. Think of it from his perspective - he spends time away from his family and his business, to organise (with a small number of others) velodrome events twice each week and the proposed crit course.  He might have felt your comments to be a bit unfortunate.

If you wish to work to increase the number of females participating in cycling, would you be prepared to work on a multiclub committee to promote cycling to women and to organise women specific events?

MC I was thinking of a response but you have said it with a lot more tact than I thought possible. When I go before the court for my proposed **** run at the SCG this summer I want you in my corner. You're out of the fridge.

Are you suggesting I don a wig and be the new poster "girl" for Newcastle cycling?  We do a bit of marketing in my business, and my semi-informed view is I would not a successful poster girl...

Well, if you are going to do a **** run, make it worthwhile and write across you rear end an inciteful comment - perhaps "No Y, Y not cycle?" or (if you eat more to get an MC sized butt) "Don't just have a menstrual cycle, get a bicycle".

See, I like to help.

Ms Gilligan has impressed many with her strong riding.

I have noticed many good cyclists - both with Y chromosomes and unburdened by Y chromosomes - have that broad shoulder/narrow waist thing goin' on.  I am half way there - just a bit wide around the mid section!

MC,

I see that my pen is indeed mightier than my sword.

The answer to your question is "yes" but due to geography and time constraints, it would only be as a general committee member, not convenor or "office-bearer"

Simply Red,

The list that I compiled was of Newcastle based female TRACK cyclists.  IMHO, as the topic was future developments at the velodrome, I thought it fitting to restrict the list to track accomplishments.
If I have missed seeing you training/racing at the track, please accept my apologies and consider yourself in the list.

In conclusion , some previously posted positive comments:

Gai,

Any assistance is useful, even if from a distance. Will chat to some like minded women and get back to you.

You won't retire - you have things Ihave yet to achieve - state placings!
