Im curious on the avg speeds e grade is on their 34 km handicap st kocc
just curious so I have something to work at before having my first dig at racing
My advice is just to give it a go. If/when you get dropped from the bunch, you simply learn from the experience. It's all part of the fun.  :D

From my recorded data for graded scratch races, KOCC E grade runs around the 34km/h (+-1km/h) average. Vets runs slightly slower (33.5km/h) and seems less aggressive (i.e. everyone seems to be out for a ride, without too much surging). HD Friday nights ran anywhere between 32km/h and 37km/h (usually dependent on how many people turned up and how many laps).  Handicaps run a bit faster, depending on who turns up and how organised the group is.

Remember though, that drafting will allow you to go much faster than you can solo, so don't be concerned by the speeds (I'm pretty sure certain I couldn't time-trial at the speeds we run around at during graded scratch races.

and, as a general rule, while the higher the grade the faster the average speed, there ar plenty of times where the average speeds for B, C and sometimes D grade are not all that different - what IS different tends to be the frequency, severity and duration of "efforts".  I recall having been thrown in a combined A/B grade race (where I ran third - must live in the past as the present give no joy) thinking "these guys are soft" because they were doing 27 kph down to the roundabout, only to have to sit on some stupid speed just to barely hold on for a couple of klms.

Singlespeeder - give it a go.  Most fun you can have with your lycra on.

If I can make one further recommendation, when you can give the Steel River crits a go.  They are a different thing altogether to scratch and handicap races, and are very useful is helping you get your "race head" working.  Hard work as well.  The Steel River course is also bump and glass free, so it is really nice to have a race where you are unlikely to cop a flat.

SS,
When you race you will ride faster than you would normally think you can. This is due to the drafting and due to the adrenaline. But don't let the adrenaline think you are better than you are as happenned to me in my first race in E grade at Black Hill. It was a combined D & E and I rode away from them because I thought they were going too slow. I should have stayed up the back because they overtook me and rode off into the distance.
When you race, Sunday morning is a good start with Hunter Valley Vets.
Just do me a favour. If you see a woman there in F grade ride behind her all the way and overtake her right at the end. As you are overtaking her give her a smile and tell her not to correct Daddy Walrus' grammar.

DW - my first race in E grade was pretty much the same...2nd Wheel's last C grade crit was exactly the same as well...cough cough.  Sure, he used the old "I won yesterday - can not back up" excuse (pg 47 in "The Book of Excuses for Dummies" by The Choker) :-*

DW

Congratulations!

I detect no grammatical errors and only one spelling mistake in your last post.  There have been posts by other correspondents on this forum with more of both.

Observation from she who has a BA with a double major in Mathematics. ( The only language subjects in my degree were German and French- no English studies since the HSC - 1970).

SS may have difficulty cruising past me in an HVV F grade race as he/she has indicated that he/she has an average speed comfortably exceeding the averages recorded by F grade.

...I am sick of 2nd Wheel following me around - he follows me around in races, and now coes to my work building to spy on my advanced race prep...

Sadly, I did have a Chicken snitzel sandwich, a potato scallop and a Coke.  Very bad.  I only hope Old Man Commuter has eaten less healthy than I have for the big crit showdown tomorrow.

If your a member of KOCC your can race in the championship events, you might find that you could end up in a higher grade however as they might not want a unknown to turn up and blow the race to pieces.

From the weather forecast it is not looking good for a weekend of racing.

I have no problems racing in the rain, I actually really enjoy it, love to go fast around corners and ride through deep pools of water.

What are you called when you are always looking over you shoulder to see who is following oh I know insecure. I know the feeling of people following me for the last 400m to the finish line.

Sometimes the day license fee can be taken off the fee of the membership if you join the club shortly afterwards, ask when you go over there I guess to confirm that this would be the case.
