Metro,

You may be the Turtle of Argon fame son. To date, Turtle has broken about 12 Treks. Metro is on the trail with a couple of Argons in a few years. Look out Turtle, Metro is after you. This is one race he could win. Shalom

Your friend

2nd Wheel,

Thanks for the offer of a loan but I'd hate to crack a frame, esp a "crack n fail" (although I do love 'em!).
The trackie has front and rear brakes fitted, and will shortly have a freewheel fitted on the other side of the hub.

Ferret,

You forgot the  MTB I **** about 5 years. I can not fault the responses of Hadleys and Giant in respect of the replacement of the Giant nor the responses of Active and FRF on the first **** Argon ti - both were promptly replaced and the service from both Hadleys and Active was excellent.

I've found Giant to be very reliable - I still have one that is 15 years old and after a swag of crashes there is still no sign of cracking

Metro

Hope you have a larger front chainring. 48T x 16T = 81" might be a bit small. Then again you roll down hills very well.
keep it rubber side down

My Giant TCR carbon road bike was brilliant, and still going under someone else.  I doubt it will ever break.  A business partners has a CFR and he has had that for a long long time, and unless he throws it under a truck it won't break.  I think Giant makes very good bikes.

Both frames replaced under warranty to date were welded metal frames, and **** on the driveside chainstay near the bridge between the two chainstays.  I suspect each failure was a result of a slightly less than perfect weld (much harder to weld Ti than Al) coupled to a fat bunter riding with at times less than perfect technique.  If I weighed 60 kg I suspect neither frame would have failed.  If I weighed 60 kg I suspect I might be quicker up hills but slower down them.

I have a 48 x 15, which I think is about 88".  I can get up to about 64 kph for a brief time, and can coast thereafter.  It is the going up bits that will present a challenge...

When i got my giant at 15 years of age i was 85 kg and rode it for about 7 years without problems. When i first started riding again 18 months ago  i was 118kg and it got me through to about 96 kg, it still works well, but i just wanted a new bike with 10 speed, newer gear etc. I would have bought Giant again only i didn't have the money and settled for some dodgy bike shop brand instead.

Now at 92 kg, I climb enough to stay with a pack, but im pretty shattered at the end of a ride dragging the extra weight up a hill. I doubt i have the potential to go under 85kg, because when i was that weight i was less than 10% body fat which is considered a really healthy measurement

I was 123 kg when I purchased by Giant TCR Composite, dropped to about 94 kg (from memory) while I had it, and no problems with it at all.  I was about 123 kg,  or a bit heavier, when I **** the MTB, which I rode through Glenrock to and from work most days.  I think I was about 95 to 100 kg when I **** the Ti Argon.

I am now 110kg >:( :( :'(, and I too find the extra mass a huge drain climbing long hills but not short punchy hills.  I am about to ride the back way up Carnley Avenue on my way home from work tonight on the aforementioned track bike - now that is one tough little hill, especially without eating since breakfast at 3Beans at 7am this morning.

Eat more Vovo's?  ;)

You rode well Metro on the SS, Maybe gears are over rated! You even finished the race puncture free, congrats.

It was good to race on an undulating course for a change.

Spokey, I had a ball - amazing how different your mindset is when you have one gear. Heaps of fun - very highly recommended. I knew  I was not going to have the gear to take on the sprint!

If I have SS at Kooragang I would ride a 48-14, but the 48-16 was good for getting up the hills at Blackhill.

Seems likely that I will be riding the trackie again for the Suzie Hadley Bunch Handicap

I don't know too much about gear ratios, but I think your on the right track. There was a guy on a SS in C grade at Vets today. He rode well but looked like he was spinning out at times! He did comment it was hard to get to the front, but maybe that was a ploy! :D
