Celebrities really give me the shtis.

I watched the news last night and see Nicole Kidman addressing the US Congress on violence to women.  Honestly, WHY is her view important, or any more important (to the US Congress) than the views of one of its ordinary citizens.

I do not understand this.  Why is the view of an insanely wealthy person, with a lifestyle that has little in common with the bulk of the US population, so relevant?  Why is it because she is, at some level, a successful and popular actor her views are so important.

It is not just Kidman - I still think the high point of her career was BMX Bandits.  We did the same thing here, when all these famous people attended that Future Australia conference.

Discuss.

I just do not get it.
Well, no merger so far....

Metro C,

I have a TTPMOAIDNU box.
It holds "things that **** me off and I do not understand". ???

I would happily lend it to you, but fear that it would not be of much
use, as it is very full.

If you need to know where it came from, I can PM you the details.

Perhaps we can look on the bright side and think of a "celebrity" as a means
of drawing attention to a cause/situation that requires some kind of attention
or intervention.
Papparazzi and Media tarts would not exist if we(the public) were not
curious about the information that they generate.

I just hope Nicole K has taken the time to sit with those that have endured the
violence and can thus speak on their behalf..

The media and its associated spin-doctoring drives me nuts.
With some of the things that get given air-time, you would have to wonder.
(eg; teenage party pest Corey Worthington et al).

I fear "our" Nicole probably spent more time doing her makeup than she did with any real victims.

Famous people seem, in more cases than not, to embrace a "cause" because it is a cool thing to do for famous people.  Having come in to contact, in a professional sense, with those who have been subject to violence and those who run programs to assist the victims, it galls me a little that NK probably gets a shite load more recognition than the people who are really "in the trenches", day in day out.

Perhaps one exception I have is Lance Armstrong.  You get the feeling he is 100% genuine on his support of cancer vicitims and cancer research.  Sure, Lemond might not agree...
