How many kilometers?
« on: September 06, 2010, 04:36:55 pm »
I'm new to this cycling game and was wondering in your opinion how many km's per week you need to do, to reach certain levels?

For example;

Do most D-Graders average X km per week
              C-Graders Y km per week
etc etc

I know some of it comes down to natural talent.

But what are you big boys/girls doing?

15k most weeks (I think that's about what a Friday night at the track comes to).

Because I was racing last Saturday I went all out and did about 40.  That's a big week at the moment...

Be interesting to see what people are doing.

The answer is "it depends".  For me the best miles I did were those done within a structured program from the late great Mick Chapman.

Outside of that environment, if I do 200 km including two races each week I can sort of maintain the form I have.

If I want to improve on that form I need an additional 100 km or for a couple of specific training sessions (track, efforts, sprints) or an extra race.

However, it is different for others. Some do 600km and seem to do better and others can do 100km and clean up in A grade.
Well, no merger so far....

I have averaged a tank and a half a week this winter. the car gets around 750 km to a tank so put me down for 1000 a week at the moment.

Not a lot of training going on for me for the last 2 weeks due to a muscle / hip injury, think I only managed about 40 km of easy riding last week.

However a few weeks ago I was doing well over 500 km a week, including a ~200 km ride that included 2 climbs up Bingleburra.

I guess I over did it when doing a loop of the lake (~100km) in a 57 km/h head wind the following day after a hard Wed morning Terrace ride (~120km by the time I got home).

Hope to be back into 500 + km weeks shortly, but will slowly build back up until I am sure my problem is fixed.

Does mental preparation count?

I do about 100km during the week (3 sessions around 30km) and a race on the weekend.
I can't really do more than that due to work and family.
Intensity is the key. I destroy myself on 2 of those sessions.
My philosphy: A 400m runner doesn't train by jogging 200 laps of the oval.

Well, as one of my cars in the smash repairers (not my fault, so no Milf/Turtle comments please) I am having to ride my bike to and from work, and that means multiple trips to Raymond Terrace and likely Thornton (to your place of work, DW...).  I will do about 500 km this week, without racing...sweet.
