Boonen sometimes rides a 34 x 28

True, he says so in the following interview (seems like a good bloke putting up with the interview bird).

What's the smallest road gear you have?  39 x 25 which is pretty standard, yes?

I have one 11-26 cassette, mostly I use 12-23, on my TT wheels I have a 11-23 all 10 speed with a 39-53

On my Aldi bike I have a 13-23 for training and a 12-21 for racing all 7 speed with a 39-53.

When I was younger and 79 kg I used ride 12-18, 12-19 & 12-20 (for the really hilly races) all 7 speed with a 41-53, I am still using some of the gears out of those cassettes, as you could reverse the cogs on uniglide and I replaced chains before they would have excessive wear, and I would only tend to wear out the 18,17 & 16.

When i turned Junior in 76 and could race with gears I rode 54-44 with a 13-17 5 speed screw on clusters (Multi tooth track wheel).

But when you see him in a faded skinsuit you somehow forget that he predated gears
Well, no merger so far....

In 76, I was already married with two toddlers.

(And apart from tricycles etc, I had never owned a bike).

Who needs 10 or 11 gears when you can get this system for $7000

If your strong on hills the 39 x 23 would be ok I have used that in the past there, if I race tomorrow the 39 x 26 will be fitted, my father is using his 34 x 25.

A 11 is good for the down hill sections.
