I hope the young starter-outer goes back and races again. In time he will learn the appropriate unwritten conduct in a bike race. The more experienced riders should help him and encourage him. When i first started out at 12 i struggled to keep up with the adults but they'd help get me to the line and tell me to go for it. Sometimes a couple of them would drop back and drag me to the pack. It was very encouraging and as i got stronger i repayed the favour from time to time. It was good to have a bunch of guys who realised that a club race is not the Tour De France. Even in the Tour the key riders have a team to do all of the work for them.
